Putting Trust Lands to Good Use
Created in 1994 by the Utah Legislature, the Trust Lands Administration manages Utah’s approximately 3.3 million acres of combined surface and mineral estate, an additional 1.3 million acres of minerals-only estate, and 85,000 acres of surface-only estate.
The independent agency generates revenue through energy development, real estate planning, and surface resource use. Proceeds are deposited into permanent endowments for each of its 12 beneficiaries.
Since the Trust Lands Administration began managing the land, it has generated $1.96 billion in revenue, which has helped grow the Permanent Fund from $50 million to $3.7 billion.
