SITLA and Proposed Expansion of the Utah Test and Training Range

Senators Orrin Hatch and Mike Lee have announced their intent to move forward next year with legislation to expand the Utah Test and Training Range (UTTR). This legislation will support emerging defense needs and will solidify the future of Hill Air Force Base. Also included in the UTTR legislation is authorization for the exchange of 87,000 acres of school trust lands and minerals located within the proposed expansion area, to be traded for federal lands elsewhere in western Utah. The School and Institutional Trust Lands Administration (SITLA), which serves as manager and fiduciary of the 3.3 million acres of school trust lands in Utah, will acquire Bureau of Land Management lands with potential for mineral, renewable energy, and grazing uses to support public schools and local economic development. SITLA appreciates the efforts of Senators Hatch and Lee for protecting Utah’s school trust in connection with the UTTR expansion, and supports their efforts to enhance the utility of UTTR for future defense uses.
