The Utah School and Institutional Trust Land Administration’s Cultural Resources Management Team (SITLA) was recently honored with the Bureau of Land Management’s 2015 Utah’s Partner in Cultural Resource Management Award. SITLA Chief Archaeologist Kenny Wintch accepted the award on behalf of his team, which includes archaeologists Kristine Curry, Joel Boomgarden, and Lisa Beck. The BLM award recognized SITLA’s continued cooperation, collaboration, and proactive support. Wintch reports the two land management agencies face similar cultural resource management issues and are intertwined because most state trust lands are scattered within federal domain. SITLA’s Cultural Resources Management Team helps the agency comply with Utah laws, which require state agencies to consider potential impacts to historic and archaeological resources within project areas. These professional archaeologists assist the agency’s Development, Surface, Oil and Gas, and Mining business groups with statutory compliance in preparation for land transactions, including surface sales, easements, and leases.
