McCoy Flats Non-Motorized Trail Complex
Partnership with Bureau of Land Management, Local Community
The McCoy Flats Non-Motorized Trail Complex is located southwest of Vernal, Utah and consists of approximately 47 miles of single-track mountain biking and hiking trails. The Complex traverses three parcels of school trust lands, which are managed by SITLA to generate revenue for Utah’s public school system.
Approximately 10.24 miles of trails reside on these three SITLA parcels, and include portions of Fire Sale, Jackalope, More Tools, Retail Sale, Slippery When Wet, and Serpendipity trails.
In 2012, SITLA entered into a [wpfilebase tag=fileurl id=8359 linktext=’Memorandum of Understanding’ /] with the Bureau of Land Management Vernal Field Office to allow conditional access to trust lands within the trail complex. Section V of this Memorandum allows both the BLM and SITLA to pursue development opportunities, should they arise.
Public use of and access to all trust lands can be withdrawn at any time to allow SITLA to meet its legislative mandate requiring the agency to generate revenue to support trust land beneficiaries. While no competing projects are under consideration at this time, trail access may be restricted, routes altered or terminated, and other infrastructure removed to accommodate future development.
